The 8 Books listed below were reviewed and removed from West Ada School District’s High Schools because WASD stated that these books did “not align with the WASD Educational Program or Philosophy.” Do you believe these books are acceptable for children to check out without written parental permission?
The US Constitution’s 1st Amendment does not grant minors the right to access (or be exposed to) materials deemed to be “harmful to minors.” Please see Idaho’s “Materials Harmful to Minors” statute per Idaho Code 18-1514 and why they have been identified as harmful to minors per Idaho Code 18-1513.
Additionally, all sex education for minors in Idaho is the domain of parents:
Idaho Code 33-1608. FAMILY LIFE AND SEX EDUCATION (Parental Rights) “The legislature of the state of Idaho believes that the primary responsibility for family life and sex education, including moral responsibility, rests upon the home and the church and the schools can only complement and supplement those standards which are established in the family…”
